The annual Obergine bake off has gone international this year. Everyone picked 2 G20 countries from a hat and was tasked with finding a dish to bake from one of their chosen countries. The dishes will be served every Wednesday and will be scored out of 10 on taste and presentation.

Week 1 – Elodie’s Mexican Chilli Chocolate and Lemon Cake

Elodie got the competition started with a bang, creating a delicious Mexican cake. She impressed with two layers of chilli chocolate sponge glued together with sharp lemon curd, topped with chocolate icing and decorated with lemon slices. The sponge was light, the flavours worked well together and the whole office left clean plates which is definitely a good sign!

Elodie’s creation has set the bar high and has left us all worried about how we’re going to follow.

Week 2 – Jeremy’s Canadian Maple Cookies

Another great entry this week with Jeremy’s Canadian maple syrup cookies. The focus was more on the baking of the cookies rather than how they were presented, and Jeremy created something for everyone. There was a mixture of textures and sizes; the bigger, chunkier ones were soft and the thinner ones were a little crispier. The flavour of the syrup came through but was not overpowering. These were definitely a success as most people in the office had at least 2-3 cookies throughout the day!

Week 3 – Jason’s South Korean Green Tea Cake

The hassle of finding the Matcha powder was worth it when Jason surprised us all with his delicious green tea cake! The sponge was bright green and covered in vanilla frosting. The green tea powder gave the cake a light and fluffy texture and worked well with the frosting.

So far all of the entries have been very impressive and have raised the bar high for the following dishes. Up next is Andy followed by Sri and Shola.
