Week 7 – Tilly’s English Fairy Cakes

After struggling for a while to write about my own entry, I decided to get George to help me out and write down his thoughts on my English Fairy Cakes instead! So here goes...

In what was one of the most impressive displays of decoration the Obergine bake off has ever seen, Tilly provided each member of the team with their own personalised Fairy Cake complete with their initials. But her cakes were more the just visually appealing, they were also incredibly tasty. The cakes were light and fluffy while the icing was sweet and sugary with a great texture. For her first entry in an Obergine cooking competition, Tilly really has impressed.

Week 8 – Karen’s South African Melktart

South Africa was the country of choice for Karen this week as she produced a traditional Melktart, which translates from Afrikaans to English as Milk Tart. The filling was a delicious combination of sweet and savoury, perfectly topped off with just a hint of cinnamon. The pastry was delicious and crumbly while the filling was creamy and rich. After Karen’s previous bake off victories, this certainly lived up to expectations.

Week 9 – George’s Rose and Lemon Basboosa from Saudi Arabia

George bought the competition to an end with a tasty Basboosa cake from Saudi Arabia. Made with semolina and soaked in lemon and rose water syrup this cake was different to anything I’d ever tasted before! The syrup made the cake moist and gave it a sweet taste. It was decorated with almonds and ready cut into different pieces. It was a great way to end the competition with something a bit different that everyone enjoyed.

It was a sad day when the competition finished and we all realised our Wednesday morning cake was no longer. The standard of the competition has been extremely high throughout and there have been some great entries to the Great International Bake Off 2016.

We're now patiently waiting for the winner to be announced and the trophy handed over!
